Argentina - Practicum
Argentina, like many other Latin American countries, has historically been dominated by Roman Catholicism. However, in recent years, the country as a whole has turned more secular. It was the first Latin American country to legalize homosexual marriage in 2010 and in 2020 legalized abortion. Córdoba, in particular, is known as the “educated city” as there are several universities and an estimated 250,000 university students.
Evangelical Christians make up around 9% of the population in Argentina. However, among university-educated Argentines, only 3% are evangelical. Pentecostal and charismatic groups make the majority of evangelical churches. Very few pastors and leaders have access to theological education and, while mature churches exist, there are areas of the country where the church is still in the early stages of development. More churches are needed all over the country, and pastors are needed to lead them. Theological training is needed for university-educated leaders in urban areas and oral learners in rural areas.
Argentine culture is very social and communal. Social meetings almost always include mate (a tea-like drink) which is shared by all. Another important social event that includes food is the Argentina bbq known as "asado."
